About Daniel Barden
The Daniel Barden Mudfest was created in memory of Daniel Barden, one of the first-grade students whose life was taken during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012.
The event was founded by family members whose niece was inside the school that day. While she escaped unharmed, she lost her dear friend Daniel. In the face of unimaginable loss, Mudfest was born as a way to honor Daniel’s life and carry forward the values he embodied.
Daniel is remembered as a kind and gentle child who treated everyone with respect and joy. He had a zest for life and loved the outdoors, sports, and getting muddy. Those simple joys are at the heart of Mudfest.
What began as a mud run has grown into a nonprofit event rooted in community, purpose, and remembrance. Mudfest memorializes Daniel by creating opportunities that give back, including scholarship initiatives and charitable support made possible through the event’s proceeds.
Each year, runners, volunteers, families, and supporters come together not just to take on the course, but to celebrate connection, resilience, and the power of showing up for one another. Through Mudfest, Daniel’s spirit lives on in moments of courage, kindness, and shared experience.
